Violent Crime in Cities

Newly released figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey* show that the rate of violent crime in urban areas (= cities) increased by 61% from 2019 to 2024. The increase in suburban and rural areas was only 4% and 2%, respectively. The rate of violent crime in cities was 104% higher than the rural rate.
