President’s Trump Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Secretary has proved to be yet another 5-star Cabinet pick. Scott Turner was an NFL Player for 9 seasons, served 4 years in the Texas House of Representatives, founded a Foundation to mentor kids and improve their reading ability, and is a Southern Baptist Pastor.
“I am a living witness: your circumstances don’t determine your ability or your opportunity to succeed. We don’t have a victim or defeatist attitude … We choose to have an attitude that says we will be victorious in spite of. And that’s what we want to share with the people we serve.”
When asked in a recent interview about proposed time limits on HUD Housing Subsidies, Turner ‘s response was perfectly aligned with the Trump philosophy of making life better for ALL Americans. “Government subsidies were never meant to be a lifestyle. Government subsidies were never meant to be hammocks. They were meant to be a trampoline. We’re always going to have people in our nation who need help, and we understand that; from the heart of HUD, we understand that.”
He pointed out that time limits are for able-bodied, able-minded people, not seniors and not disabled people. “They are for people who are ABLE to work, who have the physical capacity and mental acuity to work and to look for work. Time limits are an encouragement for these people, a way to say ‘Hey, you CAN do this!’”
“When you change the trajectory for someone’s future to get out of subsidies and live a life of self-sustainability, that is not democrat or republican. Poverty has no party. … My heart, the President’s heart is: How do we help able-bodied people change the conversation? How do we help them traject out of poverty, out of government subsidies to a life of self-sufficiency?”
Common sense.
